Who would have thought that a 16 year old Swede would turn the world upside down. At Fika we are cheering for environmental activist Greta Thunberg by dedicating our next blog post to the topic of saving our planet. Find out what we do to reduce our footprint and be part of the movement by sharing your tips to make the world a better place.

Who is Greta Thunberg?

If you don’t know who Greta Thunberg is. You can mix a modern Pippi Longstocking with a rock star. She is gathering teenagers all over the world to strike for climate change. It all started off as a solo act. When Greta every Friday skipped school to hang in front of the Swedish parliament to strike for climate change.

Her act went viral and soon she was seen on climate conferences, receiving awards for being “woman of the year” and doing TED-talks. Her message is clear and she is honest how she feels about previous generation’s ignorance and politician’s inability to take action. Today school strikes are happening all over the world on Fridays thanks to Greta. And she is not backing down. She has declared that she will strike until Swedish politics are in line with the 2015 Paris-agreement.

6 sustainable choices at Fika

Everyone wants to join Greta in her movement and so do we at Fika. What she does is revolutionary and we are extremely proud to be Swedes when it comes to Greta. Here is a list of things we do at Fika for a sustainable world.

All our packaging are made out of rapidly renewable sugarcane pulp. Which means they are home compostable and will decompose into organic soil.

All our straws and bags are made out of paper. Did you know that over 1000 of sea turtles are killed annually around Australian waters being tangled up in plastic waste? Plastic straws and bags is not an option.

Plastic cutlery will never ever biodegrade. They only break up to smaller micro pieces. Therefore our take away forks and knives are made out of corn starch, which means they are biodegradable.

If you bring your own cup we give you 30 cents discount on your coffee. We also sell reusable Keep Cups to encourage people to choose a more sustainable take away coffee.

All our products are sent in biodegradable bags instead of plastic bags. This bags are made out of starches from corn husks, rice straws and wheat straws.

We offer almond, oats, coconut and soy milk to our guest. This milks have a lower impact on the environment than cow’s milk.

Fika Future

We recently watched Cowspiracy and were blown away by the negative impact the meat industry has on the environment. If you haven’t already watched it, do! Finding out more about the issue has inspired us to offer more vegetarian dishes and make them so delicious and healthy, there would be no reason to add a meaty side.

If you have any ideas how we can be more sustainable let us know!
